An interesting Book List on Money and the New Economy.

Julio Rodriguez spins a Master Narrative of the history of Civilization jumping off from David Graeber's Debt: The First 5,000 Years ISBN:1933633867 (Debt Financing) with an emphasis on Legibility. I attempt no less here than to make the case that we are witnessing an epochal change that represents a fundamental shift in the organizing principle of human civilization. Graeber takes us part of the way by building a convincing case that debt is one of the most useful concepts by which we can understand human organization into large scale societies. Or, paraphrasing from his words: Not only is debt important, but society is our debts. I take this a step further by making a case that we are not just experiencing another great cycle of debt, but that the changes wrought in the past 200 years have changed the nature of human social cognition in such a way that a new idea is emerging as the primary building block of civilization. Ash Maurya notes that useful conversations with advisors are a good idea before Customer Discovery (Customer Development) interviews. Rather than jumping into customer interviews, which can take about 4-10 weeks to complete, I now spend a little more time brainstorming and prioritizing the best “possible models” with advisors first – a process I’ll fittingly call “BusinessModel Discovery”... Unlike Customer Discovery, where you systematically start testing parts of the business model – notably Problems and Customer Segments, Business Model Discovery is about tackling the entire business model... The first objective is taking a reality check on your possible models... After documenting your Plan A, Step 2 is identifying the riskiest parts of the model. This is what you need to learn at this stage. We are good at identifying technical risk but need help doing the same with other components of the business model. The key is not taking this feedback as “judgement or validation” but as a way to identify and prioritize risk. Then move on to Step 3 and tackle that risk through experiments. (more)

Google is buying Motorola's Mobility business. It sounds like this is mainly part of the Patent war around Android. Do they really want to own a hardware business? If not, what will they do about that? Albert Wenger agrees they will probably dump the hardware business (though, if Patent-s are so key in this industry, who would buy a hardware business with no patents?), and agrees that Jean Louis Gassee's parallel idea of Apple Computer buying a TelCo would be horrible.

The S And P Credit Rating agency downgraded US debt, triggered by the Debt Ceiling games. In an unusual Saturday conference call with reporters, senior S.& P. officials insisted the ratings firm hadn’t overstepped its bounds by focusing on the political paralysis in Washington as much as fiscal policy in determining the new rating. “The debacle over the debt ceiling continued until almost the midnight hour,” said John B. Chambers, chairman of S.& P.’s sovereign ratings committee. Another S.& P. official, David Beers, added that “fiscal policy, like other government policy, is fundamentally a political process.” Initial reactions from Congressional leaders suggested that S.& P.’s action was unlikely to force consensus on the fundamental divide over spending and taxes. Politicians on both sides used the decision to bolster their own long-standing positions.
